NOTES
Sex Ed.
Committee Update
Sex Ed.
Committee members meet on June 24th at Wolf Creek from 12:30 to
1:00.
Members
present were: Sheryl Palmquist, Tracy
Quarnstrom, Stacy Bender and our new member Taran Warren.
Discussion
Points were as follows:
·
The
MOAPPP (Minnesota Organization On Adolescent
Pregnancy, Prevention And Parenting) Conference that was attended by Sheryl
Palmquist and Tracy Quarnstrom on May 7-8, 2009. We
renewed Wolf Creek’s Organizational Membership for the 2009-2010 year until May. We also discussed the sessions that were
attended and the what and how the committee would like
to move forward with some of the information and resources that we learned
about.
·
We
would like to campaign or recruit some parent advisors to sit on the Sex Ed.
Committee. The committee will be doing
this over the summer months and asking parents at open house nights if
interested.
·
The
committee would like to look at Wolf Creek’s Health I & II courses and to
see all the standards that are covered in those courses and how much of the
courses cover sexual health in youth.
From there we would also like to look at how we are framing the messages
about this topic and how we teach sexual health and the methods that are being
used to teach students this most needed information on youth development and
all the choices that are involved with ones sexual health.
·
The
committee also briefly discussed the opportunity to make another class that
would be an elective course that would go deeper then Health I & II on the
topic of Sex Ed. and the changes and all the choices that come with sexual
health for a person. The idea was to
title this course Personal Awareness.
·
Pass
out copies of 2009 MN Adolescent Sexual Health Report from MOAPPP and the What do parents think about sex education? Report from the
University of MN – Division of Adolescent Health & Medicine.
Next meeting is yet to be determined.
